Read original articleResearchers at Rockefeller University have developed MultiQ-IT, a prototype device that revolutionizes mass spectrometry by enabling massive parallelization in molecular analysis. Traditional mass spectrometers analyze molecules sequentially, which limits sensitivity and speed, often missing rare but biologically important molecules. Inspired by how cells use hundreds of nuclear pore complexes to manage molecular traffic simultaneously, MultiQ-IT employs a cube-shaped ion-trapping chamber with up to 1,000 electrically controlled openings, allowing it to process billions of molecules in parallel. This approach dramatically increases capacity—up to a thousand times that of conventional traps—and improves the signal-to-noise ratio by 100-fold, making previously undetectable proteins visible.
