BMW Group is advancing its use of physical artificial intelligence (AI) by deploying humanoid robots in its production facilities, aiming to automate heavy and repetitive tasks. Following successful deployments of humanoid robots at its Spartanburg plant in the U.S., BMW has introduced the AEON humanoid robot at its Leipzig battery plant in Germany. Developed in collaboration with Hexagon Robotics, AEON is designed for multifunctional use in manufacturing, particularly for high-voltage battery assembly and component production. The pilot project at Leipzig began with initial tests in December 2025, with further deployments planned through 2026 to explore the robot’s capabilities on the factory floor. AEON is a general-purpose industrial robot powered by advanced mechatronics, multimodal sensor fusion, and real-time physical AI, enabling it to perform precision tasks such as part manipulation, inspection, and asset scanning in dynamic environments. Its development relied heavily on simulation-first training using NVIDIA’s Isaac platform, which accelerated skill acquisition by compressing training timelines from months
