Read original articleCarbon Robotics, a Seattle-based company known for its LaserWeeder robot fleet that uses lasers to eliminate weeds, has developed a new AI model called the Large Plant Model (LPM). This advanced model instantly recognizes plant species, enabling farmers to identify and target new weeds without the need for retraining the robots. Trained on over 150 million photos and data points collected from more than 100 farms across 15 countries, the LPM powers Carbon AI, the system controlling the company’s autonomous weed-killing machines. Previously, recognizing new or variant weeds required about 24 hours of data labeling and retraining, but the LPM can now learn and adapt in real time, allowing farmers to instruct the robots to kill new weeds immediately.
The LPM represents a significant leap in agricultural AI, as it understands plant species at a deeper level, including their structure and relations, even if the specific plant has never been seen before. Carbon Robotics, founded in 2018, began developing this model after
