Read original articleChina has developed a new hybrid propulsion system for drones that combines fuel-based electricity generation with electric motor drive to optimize performance. This approach merges the endurance and power output advantages of combustion engines with the low noise and thermal signatures of electric propulsion. Traditionally, larger drones use fuel engines for longer range but generate significant noise and heat, while smaller drones rely on battery-electric systems for quieter operation but suffer from limited flight time. The Chinese system, tested with a 60-kilowatt unit, allows smaller drones to extend operational range and switch between high-power and quiet electric modes, enhancing stealth and endurance in contested environments.
Built by Sichuan Tianfu Light Power Technology, the hybrid system uses a gas turbine to generate electricity that charges onboard batteries, while an electric ducted fan provides thrust. This decoupling of power generation from thrust enables flexible energy management and a compact design suitable for small drone platforms without sacrificing performance. The development reflects China’s broader efforts to advance unmanned aerial vehicle capabilities, particularly in endurance and
