Read original articleChina has become the first country to mass-produce T1200-grade carbon fiber, a high-strength material with significant applications in defense, aerospace, robotics, and advanced manufacturing. After two decades of research and development, the state-owned China National Building Material Group (CNBM) launched a 100-tonne-per-year production line for this ultra-strong fiber, marking a major industrial milestone. The T1200 carbon fiber boasts a tensile strength exceeding 8 gigapascals (GPa), making it ten times stronger than steel while being one-quarter its weight. This breakthrough was demonstrated by twisting 120,000 filaments into a rope less than 2mm thick, capable of towing a coach loaded with 54 adults.
The production process involves pre-oxidizing precursor fibers at 200–300°C followed by carbonization at 2,000°C, enabling the transformation of this material from a costly laboratory product to an accessible industrial resource. The fiber’s combination of high strength and low density
