Read original articleThe Kenyan motorcycle market is experiencing a significant shift toward electric motorcycles, as reflected in recent data from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) and the Electric Mobility Association of Kenya (EMAK). In 2024, out of 68,804 new motorcycles registered, 4,862 (7.1%) were electric, marking a notable milestone since the electric motorcycle sector in Kenya began only a few years ago with small-scale conversions. This 7% market share surpasses the typical 5% threshold that often signals accelerated adoption in such transitions. The lower total cost of ownership and growing acceptance among motorcycle taxi operators are key factors driving this trend, supported by increasing asset financing options for electric motorcycles.
The market continued to recover strongly in early 2025 after a slump caused by post-COVID economic challenges, high fuel prices, and increased financing costs. From January to August 2025, motorcycle sales surged to 97,299 units, a substantial increase over the entire previous year.
