This physical, fully expressive character combines robotics, AI, and simulation to bring Olaf to life with realistic eye contact, stylized movements, and conversational abilities. The design incorporates iridescent fibers to mimic snow’s shimmer and a flexible “snow” costume enabling fluid motion beyond typical robotic shells. Unlike previous robotic characters such as the Star Wars BDX droids, Olaf’s movements are refined through deep reinforcement learning, allowing the robot to imitate artist-designed motions with high fidelity.
Central to this innovation is WDI’s development of Newton, an open-source simulation framework created in partnership with NVIDIA and Google DeepMind. Newton, including the Kamino simulator, accelerates the learning process for robotic characters, enabling them to master complex motions more rapidly.
