In September 2025, global plugin electric vehicle (EV) registrations reached a record high of over 2.1 million units, marking a 22% increase compared to the same month in 2024. Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) accounted for 1.4 million of these registrations, growing 32% year-over-year, while plugin hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) saw a more modest 6% rise to around 700,000 units. The slowdown in PHEV growth was primarily due to decreased demand in China; excluding China, PHEV sales actually surged by 44%, and excluding both China and the USA, growth was even stronger at 50%. BEVs represented 21% of the global auto market share in September, or 31% when combined with PHEVs, with year-to-date shares at 17% and 25%, respectively.
