Researchers at the University of Florida have uncovered critical vulnerabilities in thermal cameras used by drones, robots, and autonomous vehicles for obstacle detection in low-visibility conditions. Their study reveals that environmental heat sources can manipulate the internal signal processing of these cameras—specifically targeting image equalization, sensor calibration, and lens behavior—causing real obstacles to be missed or phantom obstacles to appear. Unlike conventional cyberattacks, these flaws do not require hacking the device; instead, certain heat patterns alone can distort how thermal data is interpreted, potentially compromising safety-critical systems. To counter these risks, the research team developed real-time defensive signal-processing techniques that detect and exclude misleading thermal signatures before they influence machine decision-making. They validated their approach through extensive simulations and large thermal image datasets, leveraging the university’s HiPerGator supercomputer for efficient processing.
