Read original articleThe Sierra Club, alongside partner organizations nationwide, conducted a “Make Polluters Pay” Week of Action aimed at holding major oil and gas companies accountable for their role in the climate crisis. Activities included rallies, press conferences, petition deliveries, legislative meetings, and social media campaigns. The initiative highlights how communities disproportionately bear the financial and health burdens of pollution and climate disasters, while fossil fuel companies profit from high energy prices and government subsidies. Sierra Club’s Director of Beyond Fossil Fuels Policy, Mahyar Sorour, emphasized the need for these corporations to pay their fair share for the damage caused.
The campaign underscores that fossil fuel companies have long been aware of their contribution to climate change but have actively misled the public and avoided financial responsibility. Meanwhile, taxpayers cover the escalating costs of climate-related disasters and rising energy prices, exacerbated by policies that hinder clean energy development. In response, several states, including Vermont and New York, have passed Climate Superfund laws requiring fossil fuel companies to fund recovery efforts
