This innovation replaces lithium, which is costly, flammable, and scarce, with sodium—an abundant and inexpensive element. The team addressed a major challenge in solid-state sodium batteries by creating a novel solid electrolyte material composed of sulfur and chlorine, which facilitates efficient sodium-ion conduction while enhancing the material’s stability and strength.
Laboratory tests demonstrated that the new electrolyte exhibits high sodium-ion conductivity along with excellent thermal and mechanical resilience, qualities essential for batteries to endure thousands of charge-discharge cycles and extreme temperatures without degradation.
