Read original articleResearchers at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) have developed a novel camera system capable of capturing high-quality optical images of commercially irradiated nuclear fuel cladding under simulated accident conditions. This breakthrough allows for detailed observation of cladding behavior during extreme events, such as a loss-of-coolant accident, which are difficult to replicate and study due to the harsh environments and limitations of conventional testing equipment. The camera operates remotely from outside a heavily shielded hot cell, protecting it from intense heat and radiation while capturing images at four frames per second.
Using Digital Image Correlation (DIC) technology, the ORNL team obtained precise measurements of the cladding’s response during the simulation, providing valuable data to improve safety models and qualification parameters for nuclear materials, especially for high burnup and accident-tolerant fuels.
