South Korean steelmaker POSCO Group plans to introduce humanoid robots to assist with logistics tasks at its steel mills, marking a significant step in applying physical AI to heavy industries. POSCO DX, the group’s service affiliate, and POSCO Investment signed a memorandum of understanding with US robotics startup Persona AI to develop humanoid robots tailored for steelmaking environments. The initial proof of concept will involve robots helping workers handle steel coils weighing 20 to 40 tons, specifically by fastening crane belts during unloading—a task that poses injury risks to humans. The collaboration aims to enhance workplace safety by reducing accidents and musculoskeletal strain through robot-human cooperation. The partnership involves POSCO DX designing robot automation systems and steelworks models, POSCO Investment supporting the proof-of-concept phase, and Persona AI developing customized humanoid robot platforms. Persona AI, which incorporates NASA-derived hand technology and precision control systems, is also conducting similar pilot programs in the US to study humanoid integration in industrial settings. POSCO intends to gradually
