DoorDash participated in Also’s $200 million Series C funding round led by Greenoaks Capital, giving the company a valuation above $1 billion and a seat on Also’s board. Also began as a project to build electric bikes and has since expanded to designing small, pedal-assist delivery vehicles capable of carrying over 400 pounds while fitting in bike lanes. The DoorDash collaboration marks the first public indication that Also will pursue autonomous versions of these small electric vehicles.
Rivian, which has been developing its own autonomy technology—including custom silicon, autonomy computers, and sensor suites combining cameras, radar, ultrasonic sensors, and lidar—may provide technological support to Also, though it is unclear if Also will directly leverage Rivian’s self-driving tech.
