Scotland has become the first UK nation to legalize alkaline hydrolysis, or “water cremation,” marking the first new funeral option in the region since 1902. This process offers an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional burial and flame-based cremation by using a pressurized chamber with hot water and alkaline chemicals to accelerate natural decomposition. The body is wrapped in a biodegradable shroud, and after several hours, only bone fragments remain, which are then processed into a fine powder and returned to families in an urn.
