Researchers at the Robotics and AI Institute (RAI) have developed a bicycle-style robot called the Ultra Mobility Vehicle (UMV) that can travel at high speeds while maintaining balance on two wheels and effectively navigating obstacles. Unlike traditional robots that slow down in complex environments, the UMV uses advanced control algorithms and artificial intelligence to continuously analyze its surroundings via onboard sensors. This allows the robot to dynamically adjust its balance, steering, and speed in real time, enabling it to avoid collisions and maintain forward momentum even in unpredictable terrain. The robot’s agility is further enhanced by its ability to perform quick turns and jumps, allowing it to overcome barriers that typically hinder wheeled robots. This combination of balance control and dynamic movement makes the UMV well-suited for environments with uneven surfaces or sudden obstructions. Potential applications include search-and-rescue missions, disaster response, infrastructure inspection, and automated delivery, where rapid movement and obstacle adaptability are crucial. The project exemplifies how integrating mechanical engineering with AI can produce highly agile
