Chinese tech giant Xiaomi has successfully deployed a humanoid robot in its electric vehicle (EV) assembly line, achieving a 90.2% success rate in installing self-tapping nuts at a die-casting workshop. The robot completed the task within 76 seconds, meeting the production line’s fastest cycle time requirement. This deployment represents a significant milestone in Xiaomi’s vision for large-scale application of humanoid robots in automotive manufacturing. Ongoing validation tests are being conducted at other production stations, with further updates expected. The robot’s task involved precise alignment and installation of self-tapping nuts, a complex process due to the nuts’ spline structure, variable gripping postures, and magnetic interference. Xiaomi addressed these challenges using a data-driven joint training framework powered by a 4.7-billion-parameter Vision-Language-Action model combined with reinforcement learning. This approach enables the robot to learn from multimodal sensory inputs (vision, touch, joint position) and adapt quickly to complex scenarios. The robot’s full
